Here's something slightly less car related. Did anyone else actually watch the Nye/Ham debate? It wasn't much of a debate, but it was entertaining.

I watched about half of it, then got mad and quit it. Clearly an overreaction, but it was definitely interesting.

I did. It was kind of annoying really. You can't say the bible is true because it says it in the bible. That is like saying I didn't murder that hooker because I said so. . .

Yeah, it was definitely frustrating to watch at points. I was annoyed that direct questions were avoided like the plague, but I can't say I didn't expect that.

I'm sorry did you write something? I was busy looking at that ass.

I didn't watch it, I figured it would just get frustrating. As a Christian, I hear lots of idiotic arguments made by other Christians about why God is real, creation happened, etc. I think science and religion can get along great...but so many don't.

You can't verify that anything in the past is true with science because you weren't there, but you can trust the millennia old word of man, since god told them to write it.

The cognitive dissonance should be enough to make someone's head pop.

I knew Ham was crazy, I didn't realize quite how crazy he was. Or exactly how much of an agenda Nye has against him.

It was hosted by the church, in the church, on the churches Youtube channel, and the questions were asked by a member of the church. Yet, Bill Nye still made more sense then Ham. His opening part about the animals not all ending up the same layer when the great flood occurred made me laugh.

It's definitely a great looking Skyline.

Ham was a young earth creationist, who interprets the bible literally. Lots of my Christian friends were facepalming through the debate. He definitely does not speak for the majority of Christians.

I've been avoiding watching it. As a Catholic who also isn't an idiot I prefer to use the bible as a guide to being a good person, not disproving already proven science.

Nye seemed like he was out to educate, rather than debate. He probably knew going in that he wasn't going to change Ham's mind, and it even got to that question at one point.

"What would it take to sway your belief in your respective causes?"

Nye-"Evidence."

Ham-"Nothing."

Exactly, they are being countering their own points!!! It is so unbelievably annoying. I did like the point about some parts of the bible are just stories but other parts are true. . . cause that just solidified its legitimacy

Nye pretty much systematically dismantled his opponent throughout the debate, but I expected nothing less.

I was raised Catholic, so I see where you're coming from. I always thought (and was always taught) that the bible was a great book of parables, but not the literal word of God. I've since found more comfort outside of the church, but at the same point I've really internalized a lot of the teachings from the bible. Being a good person, helping others in need, etc.

"Is it pious because God wills it, or does God will it because it is pious?" - one of my all-time favorite quotes.

Sure. I picked up on that, but they really both had to know that nobody was going to change minds. It seemed like a presentation for both of them.

Well, asking a Christian about the new testament and the old testament will often evoke that response. Ham is unusual in the sense that he interprets the OT literally as well. Read Leviticus sometime if you ever get the chance.

I like the insanely long tradition, the gigantic reach of the church, and the formality of mass. Like I said I try to take the messages and not the word for word.

For example the old and new testament blatantly contradict themselves. Eye for an eye and then turn the other cheek.

which is it?!

btw, new pope kicks ass

In my opinion Pope Francis knows that he needs to change the status quo in order to strengthen the church through the 21st century.

You know something is wrong when there's athiests talking about how much they like the new pope :)

wrong or right?

I think he will welcome so many new members and old who stopped practicing into the church.

Doin good stuff man

Yes it is.

Yeah I can imagine, based off what I read following it. I believe the bible is purposely vague in order to lead us to discover the wonder of the universe ourselves. I mean, obviously from my perspective, God made the laws of physics, and everything in the universe has to abide by them...why else would they exist. We just can't even come close to understanding how it all works yet.

Yeah, that's how my mother always was. Devout Catholic, but as a programmer/chemist she definitely found science to be completely reconcilable with religion.

When debating religious topics, quoting Leviticus is like using hollow-points.

I started to watch it. Got through the introductions and opening statements, then found out they each had 30 minute presentations and stopped. tl;dr - I already knew nye would win and had no idea who ham was so didn't bother to watch anymore.
